The People Living with HIV Stigma Index in The India was conducted between December 2010 to September 2011.
The total of 1594 people living with HIV participated in the survey: general male- 489, general female- 593, trans-genders - 162, MSM- 196, FSW- 98,PUD- 56.
People aware of their confirmed positive status, above 18 years old, able to communicate in Tamil and agreeing to participate in the study were chosen for the interviews. People below 18 years old were excluded because it was difficult to obtain consent of their guardians.
Almost half of the sample (47%) reported being in a current relationship with the majority living with their partners. While relationship status was divided between cohabiting (41%), single (21%) and widowed (23%), the majority of respondents in each sub population, with the exception of general female, reported to be sexually active.
