Regional partners include the UNAIDS Regional Support Teams (based in Panama and Trinidad and Tobago) REDLA+ (Red Latinoamericana de personas viviendo con VIH/SIDA) and REDCA+ (Red Centroamericana de personas viviendo con VIH/SIDA).
Regional partnerships are being consolidated in the Americas to support the future rollout of the index in the region. The international partners worked closely with the IPPF regional office (based in New York), the UNAIDS Regional Support Teams (based in Panama and Trinidad and Tobago) REDLA+ (Red Latinoamericana de personas viviendo con VIH/SIDA) and REDCA+ (Red Centroamericana de personas viviendo con VIH/SIDA) to plan, implement and support follow-up from the regional training workshops.
The regional training for the People Living with HIV Stigma Index took place in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (24 - 27 June 2008) for 19 participants from 16 countries in Latin and South America and the Caribbean: El Salvador, Argentina, Guatemala, Colombia, Honduras, Paraguay, Panama, Brazil, Jamaica, Haiti, Guyana, Ecuador and Peru. The facilitators were from IPPF, UNAIDS and REDLA+ (and were from Chile, Mexico, Trinidad and Robago, the Dominican Republic and Australia). Observers attended the meeting from UNAIDS Regional Support Office, UNAIDS Dominican Republic, Pan-American Health Organisation (PAHO) and the national family planning association of the Dominican Republic (Profamilia). The workshop was conducted in English and Spanish.
By 2010 seven out of 16 countries that attended the training in 2008 had completed or were in the process of implementing the People Living with HIV Stigma Index.
A regional workshop was held in Mexico City in November 2010 to share experiences and lessons learnt from the region. Activists, interviewers and technical teams from Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico and the Dominican Republic exchanged ideas and experiences and the regional networks -REDCA+ and REDLA+ will relay experiences to counties planning to rollout the stigma index. Representatives from UNAIDS and IPPF also attended and will ensure recommendations are shared beyond the region.
To date the People Living with HIV Stigma Index has been completed in Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, and Paraguay.
